Where To Find Accurate Treadmill Ratings & Treadmill Reviews

Lets face it, buying a used treadmill is always going to be something of a gamble. For many people, the sticker price of new treadmills can be daunting. A very basic treadmill can start as little as $400, and the premium models with all the bells and whistles can be over $3000. So many people opt for a used or discount treadmill hoping to save some money.

But how do you know that the treadmill you are buying is a good one? One good way to find out if that used treadmill is going to be worth it is to do some homework. All the different brands of exercise equipment are not the same. Some are definitely of better quality than others. Read treadmill reviews and treadmill ratings for the brand of treadmill you are looking at purchasing. Chances are, if it has an excellent rating as a new piece of exercise equipment, it will also be a good used item, as well.

Some of the things you should consider when buying a used treadmill include the age and the frequency that it was used. A good rule of thumb is to never buy a used treadmill that is more than five years old. Equipment that old is going to need some major work very soon.

Experts suggest that you should never pay more than 50% for used exercise equipment. This is the going rate; so dont offer more than that.

When buying a treadmill, you should consider all the features of it. It must suit your needs or it is not a bargain. Things like speed, incline, deck type, type of motor and belt, user-friendly control and display panels, durability and stability of the frame and the safety features are all things that should be looked at before buying. Again, checking the ratings for safety and performance of the type of treadmill you are looking at will give you a lot of insight into how it will perform as a used piece of equipment.

There are many companies that sell remanufactured or refurbished exercise equipment. This is equipment that has been sent to a factory and had all the worn parts replaced and been spiffed up to look as good as new. This is a good option for a discount treadmill, because they usually come with some type of warranty.

There are many places to find out about the ratings for treadmills, both new and used. Checking online sources, reading magazines and publications for exercise equipment and asking people who own and run exercise gyms are all good ways to find out about the best and worst treadmill ratings and reviews. This way, you can make an informed purchase of discount or used treadmills with confidence.

Olive Oil, The Healthy Choice.Ruth BirdOlive oil is a healthy choice over other fats such as butter, palm and coconut oils because olive oil is a monounsaturated fat that does not increase levels of cholesterol and triglycerides.

Dr. Sears' Extra Virgin Olive Oil is an exquisite tasting imported oil from select regions of Umbria and Sicily, Italy. The environmental conditions, weather, exposure to the sun and nature of the soil in these regions contribute to the high quality of these local, organically grown olives.
But theres more to this olive oil than an exquisite flavor alone. Dr. Sears' rigid controls and special processing techniques preserve the quality and antioxidant properties of this very special olive oil.

Dr. Sears Extra Virgin Olive Oil is incredibly rich in antioxidants including squalene and polyphenols (such as tyrosol, hydroxytyrosol and oleuropein). These compounds are powerful antioxidants.

Antioxidants are important to your health because they scavenge free radical molecules known to increase general cellular inflammation, which is the origin of affected health.*
What's in Dr. Sears Olive Oil and how does it work?
Antioxidants Fight Free Radicals
Free radicals are extremely reactive chemicals that can wreak havoc in the body. Scientific evidence suggests they are the cause of accelerated aging and many other health concerns. Antioxidants help deactivate free radials.

I have researched this topic and come up with some very interesting information and data.

Soil Quality & Processing Ensure Potency
The soil quality in the select regions of Umbria and Sicily, Italy ensure the maximum levels of antioxidants. These special olives are processed under the mildest possible conditions to prevent the oxidation of these powerful antioxidants and then packaged under nitrogen to preserve oil quality. The squalene and polyphenol content is certified by an independent laboratory.

Finest Quality and Flavor
Extra Virgin is the finest grade of olive oil and only given to oil from the first pressing. Dr. Sears' Extra Virgin Olive Oil is pressed from the finest cultivars organically grown for an extraordinary flavor that is fruity and well rounded. It contains NO pesticides

Olive Oil extraction is the process of extracting the oil present in the olive.

Traditional Method Olive Press: The Olive Press has been in use since Roman times, it works by applying pressure to the olive paste does separating the liquids (oil and vegetation water) from the solid material. The two liquids are them separated by standard [[decantation]].

This method is the most widely used in the world, and if adequate precautions are taken its still a valid way of producing high quality olive oil.

First the olives are grind in to an olive paste, for this end large grindstones are used. The olive paste generally stays under the stones for 30 40 min, this has three objectives:
* guarantee that the olives are well grind
* malaxe (i.e. remix continuously) the olive paste allowing the small olive droplets to join
* allow the fruit [[enzymes]] to work producing some of the oil aromas.

The traditional method is a valid form of producing high quality olive oil, if after each extraction the disks are properly cleaned from the remains of paste; if not these will go in fermentation producing of flavours (called defects) that will contaminate the subsequently produced olive oil.
A similar problem can affect the grindstones, that in order to assure perfect quality, also require cleaning after each usage.

Technical Aspects: Proper cleaning with the use of high quality olives will produce high quality oil.
The grinding work of the grindstones, when compared to the modern method, is more adequate because it grinds the drupes pulps while touching only slightly the nut and the skin. This reduces the release of the oil [[Rancidification|oxidation]] enzymes present in these organs.
When compared to the modern method the introduction of water is minimal, does reducing the washing of the [[polyphenols]].
The exhausted paste, called [[Pomace]], has a low content of water making it an easier residue to manage.

Modern Method: The modern method of olive oil extraction uses an industrial decanter in order to by [[centrifugation]] separate all the phases.

In this method the olives are crushed by the use of a rotating mechanical mill, that grinds the olives in to a fine paste.
This paste is them malaxed for 30 to 40 min in order allow the small olive droplets to agglomerate. The aromas are created in these two steps throw action of fruit enzymes.

Afterwards the paste is pumped in to an industrial decanter where the phases will be separated. To facilitate the extraction process with the paste there is added a certain quantity of water.

Sinolea: This is the most recent method to extract oil from the olives, its based on the different [[Surface_tension| surface tension]] of the vegetation water and the oil, these different physical behaviour allow the olive oil to adhere to a steel plaque while the other two phases stay behind.Decanter).

The main advantage of this method is the high quality of the oil produced. By reducing the contact of the paste with water the losses of prised aromas and [[polyphenol]]s are minimized. Several high quality oils are marketed has Sinolea Extracted

First Cold Pressed Cold Extraction ==

Several oil are marketed has first cold pressed or cold extraction, this is a denomination describing the temperature at which the oil was obtained.

First Cold Pressed refers to oils obtained with the Traditional method, wile Cold Extraction refers to oils obtained by the Modern or Sinolea method.

The temperature of malaxation and extraction is crucial because it has an important effect on olive oil quality. When high temperatures are applied the more volatile aromas are lost and the rate of oil oxidation is increased, producing therefore lower quality oils.
The temperature is adjusted basically by controlling the temperature of the water added during these two steps. High temperatures are used to increase the quantity of olive oil obtained from the paste.

Consumer point of view: High quality olive oil can be obtained by all the methods if proper measures are taken. Olive oil quality is more dependent on the quality of the olives themselves and on the time they have to wait from harvesting to extraction, than on the extraction method itself.

Choosing the Right Treadmill for You

Convenience, ease and the efficiency of Treadmills have made them a revelation in the health industry. We have gone through such a variety of fitness exercises which either break your back trying to get them right, or are too difficult to master, let alone do them every day. But with a treadmill, you can burn calories the simplest was possible, by walking or running. Which, by the way, are the two most natural exercises you can imagine! You walk when you are a 2 year old, some even before that, and yet when it comes to exercising people turn to complex gym routines and diets to stay fit!

Work schedules, personal security, weather and health status; all make us reluctant to go out doors for walks on a regular basis. So it isnt a surprise that even the worlds most advanced societies are facing health dilemmas. People in general dont have time for gym workouts, and those who do are too exhausted by long work days to do them. As for recommenders of walking as an exercise, Treadmills not only make exercise easier, they cut out the obtrusive factors which hinder us in forming routines.

In addition to providing some very helpful bits of information along the way, treadmills provide a wide variety of exercise options. From walking to hill climbing, jogging to running, you can pace yourself as you like so there is something for everyone in the use of treadmills. However, with the market being so overcrowded with a wide range of treadmills, we see a need for guidance in making the best choices for you.

At the moment there are three distinct types of treadmills available on the market. So to pick out the best treadmill for you, lets have a quick look at what each one of them has to offer.

First up is the Manual Treadmill; you dont have to be a fitness guru to understand that a manual treadmill is non-motorized. Its a simple machine with a belt and rollers that you move with your effort. The simpler a machine, the fewer are the chances of things going wrong with it. So thats a positive feature; it will last longer. However, since the treadmills belt doesnt move itself you can set your own pace, which is not so good for the lazy people who are unlikely to push themselves.

Next, there is the Motorized Treadmill with features to set the pace of your walk, jog or run. You can set your required pace and keep up with it over a period of time to get optimum exercise out of the time you spend on it. Then there are the incline options in some motorized treadmills; these can help you decide the amount of incline you want for your run. The negatives go with the positives though, its a complicated piece of equipment and when it has problems they are complicated as well. Plus a motorized treadmill is going to be more expensive, compared to a manual treadmill, but with those features, you have to decide for what you want.

Now you cant say you dont have space for a treadmill; Foldable Treadmills have made that excuse redundant. Foldable treadmills can be stored in a negligible amount of space. These are great for use in the office or at home, whenever you take a break. So, if you are facing schedule constraints, or are just too lazy to take up regular exercise, then a foldable option might just be the best treadmill for you.

Frankly speaking, there is no hard and fast rule to determine which type of treadmill is better than the other. Though a comparison of treadmill features does help you decide which one is the best for you. Keep in mind, the treadmill that suits a friend perfectly isnt certain to be even rated as decent for you. So read up some treadmill reviews and choose according to your own situation.

A top factor that will affect your choice would be your personal age and weight. Though some might say that exercise is necessary for everyone, but the mode of exercise has to differ accordingly with the individual traits. A bulky person may need a wider belt or the handlebars may obstruct the usual path of the arm movement, so check the details before you buy. Age matters when you choose as well, especially for older people, the resilience of the deck and the heart rate control are very important. Safety features help every age so make sure that you dont compromise on those. Similarly, whether you opt for running or walking determines not only the top speed you need from your treadmill, but also the size of the belt as well.

You look for a treadmill when you are conscious that you need to improve on your fitness levels. However, your aspirations determine the sort of treadmill you need. If you want to burn as much as you can in good time, trying out the incline options isnt a bad idea at all. Again heart rate interactive checks are very handy to get you to your optimum fitness levels without doing damage to your body. Who will be using it? is just as important as how will you use it?, if you buy a treadmill while targeting the fitness improvement of your whole family, then keep in mind any inhibitions that might stop a member from utilizing the treadmill to the full. Chances are if you are willing to spend enough, there will be a treadmill that will suit a diverse group of individuals like a glove!

Long or short workouts determine the quality of motor you need for your treadmill. If you use the treadmill in short bursts the peak duty might not be as useless as you first thought. It can be maintained for a short period of time by the treadmill so perhaps that restriction can help keep your treadmills price down

How much do you use it? The amount of workout that is likely to be done on your treadmill should affect your choice of equipment. The more you want to use it, the more we would recommend that you go for high quality treadmills. Repairs will even out the price difference between cheap treadmills and high-end treadmills when you compare them in the long run. Consequently, it would be advisable to go for the higher priced quality treadmill rather than a cheap treadmill that would spend more time with the repairman than it does with you!

Treadmills - Understanding the Technical Aspects

Once you set out to buy a treadmill, you can be sure that you will have enough options available to get your mind buzzing. So the ideal thing is to have some defined ideas of what aspects are required from your treadmill, and what is simply out of the question.

Horsepower has continuously baffled buyers when they look to choose a motorized treadmill. Some dealers cash in on the confusion and rant the bigger the better rhetoric. Therefore, you have to be well versed, or at least apparently well versed, in what you want. A 2.0 HP motor would do well for your treadmill, anything less than 1.5 is certainly going to wear out much quicker than youd expect, so go for the optimum option. The idea is to look out for the gimmicks dont pay heed to the terms like peak horsepower or treadmill duty; they mean nothing in the long run when you want consistent speed. The important thing is the continuous duty; which marks that the motor will be able to produce a continuous 2HP for a full 24 hr motor usage. It is a practice with manufacturers to stamp the continuous duty horsepower on DC motors, so having a look under the hood wouldnt hurt either.

Now a motors HP will get you going, but bad Motor Electronics can mar the quality of experience you will have with your treadmill, not to mention the amounts you will have to pay for repairs! Seasoned manufacturers make sure that their treadmills have a steady clip which utilizes a microprocessor to sense the belt load and adjust accordingly for silky operation. So the best treadmills will be the ones that sense your resistance if you try to slow down, and adjust accordingly to keep the set pace going smoothly. Try slowing down a treadmill while hanging on to the handle bars, and youll know what Im talking about. A low quality, cheap treadmill will show her displeasure at your rudeness by jerking and groaning, but the quality ones, I have already described.

The Motor Toque is the thing that rotates the shaft which ultimately moves against your load. So plainly speaking, the motor torque has to be high to take the load of a human body, a potentially heavy human body at that. Its simple enough to understand that you need high torque for your treadmill. But also, the number of revolutions per second have to be low. Otherwise the treadmill might make you appreciate it at high speeds but at low speeds the high revs would really tax the motor. And consequently the motor will not last long enough to justify a good buy.

With a variety of treadmill available, the buyer should be sure what kind of Speed he wants from his treadmill. Whether you want to use it for running, jogging, or just walking determines which machine would be best for you. For walking, speeds from 0 to 6mph would do fine, but for runners the best treadmill would be the one which offers speeds from 0 to 12 mph. Running a motor at top speed of its speed limit over a long period of time is a sure way to wear out the motor is a hurry, so avoid that if you dont like to pay for repairs. For starters, the safe speed is half a mile, per hour, to make sure that the jerk of the initial start wont spill you over.

The treadmills Belt has to suit your operation style as well. If you want to use the treadmill for running the belt should be 18 to 22 inches wide at least, to keep the runner safe. While the length would have to suit long strides for runners so something between 50 to 54 inches would be good. If the length or the width is not optimum for your use, then stay clear of such treadmills, as tripping on deck moving 5 mph is very likely to have you end up doing crosswords in a hospital bed. With manufacturers competing to be the best treadmill makers, the better ones provide two-ply belts that last longer and are less likely to curl at the sides. So thats the recommended stuff as it will last longer than a cheaper single ply belt.

The treadmill Deck should have shock absorbing qualities to recommend it. Usually a good manufacturer will make sure that the deck provides ease to the user. In comparison with roads, a good treadmill deck provides almost 40% shock absorption to lessen the impact on the feet and joints. Therefore, for buyers who have joint problems, or those who dont wish to develop any, the best thing is to go for well cushioned, pre treated decks. This will, of course, result in fewer maintenance requirements. Though more impact protection is certainly going to hit you right where it matters; on the wallet.

Though it is necessary to have the necessary Resilience, all the talk about the impact protection shouldnt deceive you into buying a cheap treadmill with an overly soft deck. What you need is a deck that absorbs some of the impact; rubber bushings under a flexible deck serve the purpose ideally. However, when you go out to actually shop for the best treadmill for you, you have to remember that there are no set standards for cushioning and provision of resilience. The cushioning varies from treadmill to treadmill almost. Review treadmills; try out as many as you can, be critical. Dont fall for the softer the better sales line; resilience is not meant to make the deck spongy or bouncy, a good pair of shoes and a decent deck resilience is enough to provide relief to your feet and joints, so go for it!

For treadmill Rollers though, the bigger the better. This logic is based in simple physics; rollers with larger diameter have more surface area so the bearings have to do a lot less work in comparison with smallish rollers. Plus there is the belt to take care of, if you have small rollers the belt will have to put up with more tension and consequently there will be more repair work needed as well. And of course the larger rollers have more load bearing capacity so they need less repair work than the smaller rollers, who would be rolling themselves rugged if you regularly take up high speeds. Also, keep in mind that solid rollers are better than hollow ones, and prefer steel rollers to aluminum, which start to form an almost sand paper like material between the belt and the roller surface in quick time.

Though treadmills offer wide range of Incline options, they usually vary between 2-25%. Quite understandably, cheap treadmills have manual incline options but the costlier ones offer motorized incline features. Again, motors make the treadmill more complicated piece of equipment so the repair charges increase, along with the initial price. The thing to keep in mind about incline motors is that they should be quite about their efforts, if they groan as they increase incline then beware, they will die down on you a lot sooner than youd expect. It can be easy to look for the widest range of choice and decide upon that, but seriously speaking, mostly you dont need more than 10% of incline as more can be hazardous for health. So, an innovative way might be to go for the motorized incline treadmills which keep your heartbeat in check and automatically adjust the incline to keep it smooth. Those who still cant get their heartbeat to the optimum high can just think how much they paid for the treadmill; I bet the treadmill would go downhill if it could!

Potentially the most luring thing about a treadmill is its Control Panel or console. There is a wide variety of features available on these consoles; from a speed monitor to heart rate monitor, electric incline control, distance and time, the treadmills boast a variety of features. However, too many buttons and gauges may get confusing, as well as potentially risky because they complicate the treadmill further and increase repair costs. There are LCD displays in the cheap treadmills while the high-end treadmills use LED displays that emit light from the display to make them more useful. Displays that are large simple and readable are the best options for those who dont want to spend on luxuries such as the high-end treadmills. A great feature of some high-end treadmills is the display that show error in case some part of the treadmill isnt in perfect health, definitely a good thing to have on hand, but not necessary. Ideally, the control panel should be the last thing on your mind when you decide on a treadmill, they can catch your fancy at one glance and then you wouldnt make many smart choices afterwards, beware!

A Treadmill has a Motor Controller which is an electrical power board that polices the current of the motor. Usually they are either Pulse Width Modulated board (PWM) or Solid State Control Rectifier board (SCR). A PWM board provides more DC voltage than the SCR one, as it has DC current running. Therefore, PWM boards are much quieter than SCR boards, which is recommendation enough. To add to that, they require less repair services as there are no chokes and filters to worry about, and the stronger current results in more tolerance while the heavier users are on. If you still arent convinced then let me add that the PWM have lower electric costs, and they produce less heat as opposed to the SCR boards. Therefore, their life and performance are enhanced to make them user friendly and economical in the long run.

Heart Rate Control is essential for optimum workout in the least amount of time. The more effort you make the higher the heart rate is the simple rule with the stuff. It is ideal to have a heart rate monitor on your control panel to keep the rate in check, going over board with too much effort can damage the heart, so keep an eye on it. As for the quality of heart rate monitors, the idea is to choose one that of the interactive monitors. These not only keep the heart beat in check but also increase or reduce the incline to keep your heart rate optimum. Good heart rate control monitors use chest straps for evaluation, while other, less accurate monitors use ear and finger clip pulses for monitoring purposes.

Usually, the Frame of the treadmill is made of either aluminum or alloy steel. Though steel has the potential to rust quickly but, if you take good care of it, they are stable enough to do you proud. Aluminum, on the other hand, is lighter than steel and provides easy portability, plus it doesnt rust. However, the sturdiness of aluminum is low and it is not advisable to choose it ahead of steel for that very reason. Another important thing about frames is the way they are made. Welded frame should be preferred over bolted ones; simply because bolts and are far less durable in the long run, thought they might make moving easier, but that still isnt enough to recommend them over welded frames.

Handlebars on treadmills are used for stability and balance so they should be within the reach of the user if he needs to use them. However, before selecting a treadmill, be sure that the handlebars do not come into the path of your arm motion whether you walk or run. The handlebars should be sturdy, avoid plastic ones as they might not last much. Plus the grips have to be comfortable for easy usage. It really doesnt matter how many handlebars are there in your treadmill, they can be one or two rails over the front of the control panel or a couple on the sides. What does matter however, is that handlebars should be out of your way, a swinging arm hitting a handlebar on the full might not be the ideal way to exercise, so choose wisely.

Like other moving machines, motorized treadmills should have Safety features that reduce accident potential to a bare minimum. Handlebars, as we have discussed, play a very important role in safety of the users. Along with those, emergency shut off is something that needs to be present in a good treadmill. Having said that, it would be no use to have an emergency shut off switch if it is out of reach, so check that as well. Similarly, the controls to limit the incline or speed or to turn to a gradual shut down should be within the users reach as well. Make sure that the treadmill has a safe starting speed and a gradual shut down as well, jerky beginnings or abrupt slowing may put the user in a bit of a tumble. An inbuilt circuit breaker is always handy for expensive motorized treadmills so in case of power breakdowns or accidental power problems the treadmill should shut its system down to prevent damage to the machine.

The Warranty; A quality treadmill is a long term investment. When you pay top dollars for the best treadmills, remember that you should have a guarantee that the machine will work properly over at least over a period of 1-3 years. Mostly good manufacturers offer lifetime warranty on frames while the motorized parts, electronics along with the deck and belt should have a minimum of 1 year guarantee with labor to change the problematic parts in that period. Reliable manufacturers provide even 2-3 years warranties for the parts but 1 year of labor, which is fair enough. Guard against paying added money for extra warranty as that is not likely to do you much good. However, it is always helpful to find out if the treadmill you are looking to buy will have its parts available for some time to come. Surely you dont wish your treadmill to become redundant material two years down the lane.

For most people, the Price of the treadmill becomes the check that hold them back from choosing the best option possible. Usually you would find that below 1000$ are the sort of treadmills we have done our best to guard you against. So for a quality motorized treadmill, be prepared to spend over a 1000$ at least. The high-end treadmills average over 3000$ so they rattle your pocket considerably when you go for those, but as we have discussed earlier the competitive market has done consumers some amount of good, so some excellent treadmills are available around the 2 K mark as well. The catch is to remember that buying a treadmill is a long term investment for you, so have to assess the feasibility according to your own resources. You can go for refurbished treadmills or used treadmills that are in good condition, but consider only quality treadmills if you buy a used treadmill, a low quality refurbished treadmill will certainly not be a good buy. Choose wisely, live well!

The 4 Most Common Attributes of a Quality Treadmill

With all the marketing hype consumers are facing today, its quite hard to differentiate a quality treadmill from an inferior treadmill. Thats why I researched on what quality treadmills have that inferior treadmills dont. This article, The 4 Most Common Attributes of a Quality Treadmill, was the result of that research.

The traits below are vital to a treadmills performance and are the things that youll always find in a quality treadmill.

Continuous Horsepower

One of the most important attributes of a quality treadmill is its horsepower or HP. There are 2 ways to measure the HP of a motor, through peak duty or continuous duty. Treadmills with a continuous duty horsepower mean that the motor can maintain a certain horsepower the whole workout. Peak duty horsepower means the treadmill may be able to reach that horsepower briefly, but wont be able to sustain it.

Most inferior treadmills try to make their machines look better by listing their peak duty rather than their continuous duty horsepower. Quality treadmills have nothing to hide and would always put their continuous duty horsepower upfront for everyone to see.

Powerful Motor

When I say power, what I really mean is that the motor should be able to pump power with ease throughout the whole machine. For example, a 2.5HP continuous duty motor in an entry level model is powerful, but the same cannot be said if that motor is in a commercial treadmill, since it would be way too weak to make the huge commercial unit function.

The best way to know if a treadmill has a powerful motor is by running on it. Motors of quality treadmills should not have a hard time maintaining your pace. Your workouts should be smooth and lag free, even at top speed. The moment you feel the motor is having a hard time, avoid buying that unit completely. Its a headache waiting to happen.

Low Noise Level

Another attribute of a quality treadmill is the noise level. If the machine makes too much noise, it could be due to poor engineering. Generally, the less noise a treadmill produces the better its engineering, and the better its quality.

Long Warranties

And finally, the last attribute is the warranty. Quality treadmills are usually backed wholeheartedly by the company who made it. A typical quality treadmill warranty is at least a lifetime on frames, 2 years on parts and a year on labor/service. Warranties like these show that the manufacturer is confident that their product is of high quality.

Well, there you have it. Those are the attributes of a quality treadmill. Let this article be a guide to you in your purchasing decisions.

Is A Treadmill The Best Exercise Equipment For You?

The #1 fear people have when buying a treadmill is that they won't use it. (That's the #1 fear when buying any piece of exercise equipment).

They know that a treadmill can help them lose weight, get fit, burn extra calories and reach their fitness goals.

But that's only if you use it. A treadmill is a large investment to make and you want to be sure that it is the right piece of exercise equipment for your needs.

How do you know if a treadmill is the best piece of exercise equipment for you? How do you know if it's suitable for the kind of exercise that fits your lifestyle?

If you're thinking about buying a treadmill, here are 3 ways to tell if a treadmill is the right piece of exercise equipment for you:

#1 Do you prefer to exercise alone or in groups?

Walking on a treadmill is not a group activity (it could be - but that's a little dangerous). If you prefer to exercise with other people, say for example in a group sports situation, a treadmill might not be the best choice for you.

Of course a treadmill can add another side to your exercise options if you do get most of your exercise from social or group sports. But if you absolutely hate exercising by yourself, don't buy a treadmill.

On the other hand, some people enjoy exercising on their own - it's a sort of getaway from the constant social buzz surrounding them every day. A treadmill would be great for someone looking for this kind of exercise 'retreat'.

#2) Do you prefer to exercise outdoors or indoors?

Some people prefer to exercise outdoors. They take hikes to enjoy the beauty of nature or rollerblade down the sidewalks to take in the fresh air. If you prefer to be outdoors to exercise then a treadmill probably isn't for you.

And if you live in all-year-round sunny, warm weather, you may not need a treadmill (then again, you may prefer an air-conditioned workout.)

However, if you happen to live in seasonal climates where it rains, snows or both, a treadmill can be a handy tool to maintain your fitness regimen during the bleak weather months. A treadmill can help you fight winter weight gain and even stave off those nasty winter blues.

#3 Do you enjoy walking, jogging or running?

Walking is an exercise that everybody can do. It's simple, doesn't require heightened coordination, and can be a great way to clear your head and deal with stress. Anyone can do it, regardless of fitness level - from absolute beginner to elite athlete.

There are also people who enjoy the rhythm and routine of jogging or running. Running or jogging is also one of the best all-round ways to burn fat. Again, it's fairly simple to do and doesn't require complex coordination.

While the benefits to walking, jogging and running are numerous, some people just don't like to exercise this way. They like the challenge of a box-aerobics class or mastering a complicated martial art. If you fall into this category, a treadmill will not meet your exercise preferences and it probably isn't the right machine for you.

If you do like walking but still want a challenge or even a distraction, there are easy ways to do this, of course.

Treadmills are growing more sophisticated all the time offering numerous built-in workout programs, upper-body workout arms and even built-in stereo systems for you to plug-in your favorite CD's.

There's also the magazine rack so you can read your latest Time or People magazine. And of course, the most popular method: setting your treadmill up in front of the television (or buying a mini-television to mount above your treadmill).

You can always make your workout more interesting with your home treadmill - but if you don't enjoy walking, jogging or running, you might want to steer clear of the treadmill.

So those are 3 ways to tell if a treadmill is right for you. With our busy lifestyles and lack of time, the home treadmill also offers several other unique benefits, which you might want to consider before buying:

#1) Exercise Convenience

With a home treadmill you can jump on it at any time day or night. You don't have to waste time driving to the gym. You don't have to work around your gym's hours or schedule your workout around those 'peak times'. You don't have to rush to sign up for a treadmill at the gym. It's all yours. Workout whenever you want - and for however long you want.

With our jam-packed schedules these days, time is at a premium. While you may not have a long period of time to carve out for exercise, experts tell us that 'mini-workouts' give us the same benefits as long workouts. So instead of doing 30 minutes straight, with your own treadmill you can do 15 minutes in the morning and 15 minutes at night.

There's a third convenience to having a home treadmill - you can wear what you want. No worrying about if your hair is staying under your baseball cap. No rushing to find the right T-shirt for the gym. While this may seem trivial - it can actually make a difference in how much you exercise!

#2) Exercise Comfort

With a home treadmill, you can exercise in the comfort of your own home. No worrying about the rain, snow or sleet that's pouring down outside. You can jump on your treadmill with your favorite sports drink, turn on your favorite show and burn away those calories.

No worrying about winter weight gain or holiday pounds - because you have the tools at your disposal to easily work off any extra calories.

#3) More Calories Burned, More Weight Lost = Better Body Achieved

Because you can exercise when you want, for how long you want, regardless of weather or even busy schedules, you'll use your treadmill much more. And when you exercise more, you burn more calories, lose more weight and achieve a better body. This is always a benefit!

Home treadmills continue to be the most popular exercise machines with buyers today. They offer convenience, comfort and more opportunities to enjoy getting in shape.

If you decide that a treadmill is right for you, know that you'll be investing both in a great exercise machine and a better, healthier body!

Refurbished Treadmills What Exactly Are They?

Refurbished treadmills are big business. Because treadmills can be so expensive there are many who can not afford to buy a new one. Thats where refurbished treadmills come in. But what exactly are refurbished treadmills?

Its not just because treadmills are expensive that people are looking to buy some form of second hand, used or refurbished treadmill. It can also be because there is a huge range of treadmills on the market. With a huge range of features.

The aspiring treadmill user is often aware that it is better to start at the lower end of the treadmill market and spend some time getting the feel for exercising on a treadmill.

Although treadmills are some of the most popular items of fitness equipment in the US, they dont appeal to everyone. Some people can find that they use a treadmill for a while and decide that they prefer some other form of exercise. Sometimes it not another piece of indoor exercise equipment, its just that they prefer to exercise outdoors.

So many people will spend a more limited amount of money on a lower end machine and wait until they are happy to upgrade. Others will buy a refurbished treadmill at a much lower price and get a better machine than they would get buying new at the cheapest end of the market.

Not only that, once you have spent some time using a treadmill you will get some feel for the types of features you require in a treadmill. Theres no point in rushing out and buying the most expensive, top of the range model just to find that you dont use most of the features.

So it makes sense to spend less, get some basic treadmill experience in, and then upgrade to get the exact model you want with the features you need. So you may not need to buy new for your first treadmill anyway, as you may only have it for a year or two.

Thats where refurbished treadmills come in. There are risks in just going out to look for ordinary used treadmills. You dont know what you are getting. If the motor breaks down the day after you buy it then it may become an expensive treadmill.

A refurbished treadmill, although usually more expensive than a similar second hand model, is a safer bet, especially in the long term.

So, back to our question, what is a refurbished treadmill?

There is a whole range of cheaper treadmills. They can be called refurbished treadmills, factory refurbished treadmills, remanufactured treadmills or just used or second hand treadmills.

Lets dispose of the last two first. Used and second hand treadmills are generally just treadmills that someone has used and wants to sell. You buy them, you take all the risk. Unless you know exactly what to look for when buying a treadmill like this then stay clear. Cheap treadmills like this can certainly be, well, cheap. But risky.

And the others? Generally all the terms mean that the treadmills have been disassembled to some degree and rebuilt, usually with new parts to relace broken or worn out parts. The frame sand blasted, sometimes, and the treadmill resprayed, sometimes. However there can be some differences.

Remanufactured treadmills or refurbished treadmills means just that. Treadmills which have been remanufactured or refurbished as we have described above. It doesnt tell you WHO remanufactured or refurbished them. Was it the local bicycle mechanic who did it? Often you dont know.

And what is the difference between refurbished and remanufactured? Generally remanufactured will mean an older machine which needs parts replacing because it is getting more worn out. Refurbished usually means newer machines which may even be only a year or two old and which do not have enough wear to require serious rebuilding.

Better always to look for FACTORY refurbished or remanufactured treadmills. Machines which have gone back to the original factory and been refurbished by qualified technicians. Or else a business which makes a living from remanufacturing or refurbishing treadmills.

This process should involve taking the treadmill apart, examining all the parts and replacing all broken, worn out or old parts. Before it is reassembled it should be sand blasted and repainted. It should look like a new treadmill, or at least very close to it.

So, things to look for:

1. The age of the treadmill.

2. Who is refurbishing or remanufacturing it.

3. Most importantly, the warranty you get with it.

Why the warranty? Well if its a great refurbished treadmill then they ought to recognise this with a great warranty.

No warranty? Stay clear. 60 or 90 days? Better but not perfect.

The longer the warranty, the more confidence you have in the machine. So when you buy, make sure you check out the warranty.

I have just been looking on the net at some refurbished Precor treadmills at my favourite refurbished treadmills merchant. Certainly amongst the refurbished Precor treadmills there is a lower range to choose from than new, but youd expect that. But there are still plenty of choices. And expect a substantial saving off new price.

So if youre new to treadmills and looking for refurbished Precor treadmills, or any refurbished treadmills for that matter, then there are some good choices available at some substantial savings.

Refurbished treadmills, certainly something to think about for the new treadmill user.

Epic Treadmills Good Value Or Not?

Epic treadmills are well known in the treadmill market for their budget range of treadmills. Epic treadmills are one of the lines of treadmills manufactured by Icon fitness, the largest of all the fitness equipment manufacturers and the company which manufactures, amongst others, Proform treadmills.

Icon has over $1 billion of sales of fitness equipment worldwide so is a substantial manufacturer. It manufactures reasonable quality machines for the lower end of the market but doesnt compete with the much more expensive brands at the upper end.

Epic treadmills are sold by Costco, the discount gym equipment retailer (amongst others) so you should expect low prices.

The most well known of all the epic treadmills is the epic t60 treadmill. In fact this treadmill is really the only model amongst the epic treadmill range that is well recognised.

One of the reasons for this is that the epic t 60 treadmill is well rated by some of the nets treadmills rating sites as a good value buy. And the epic t 60 is therefore a good seller.

The treadmill doctor rated the epic t60 a best buy in the price range $500 to $1000, however noted some deficiencies in the treadmill none the less. In particular they noted problems with the keypad and the rollers, but youre not going to get the perfect treadmill for under $1000.

The epic t60 has a powerful motor. It has a good cushioned running platform and can accommodate runners up to 350 lbs. It has an impressive range of user features including iFit technology, an interactive feature that Icon put on their Proform treadmills as well.

With iFit your workout becomes more interesting. Hook up to the internet and track your fitness and progress. iFit will devise a personal workout program for you, so that each time you set foot on your treadmill, you will have a new goal to reach, and a personal best to beat. Competing with yourself is a great way to increase the challenge.

iFit technology also allows you listen to music as you workout, and
provides inspirational images that can be the backdrop to your run.

And the epic t60 allows you to fold it away after you have done your workout. This is a worthwhile feature as treadmills are very large pieces of equipment and take up a lot of space.

The epic t60 treadmill boasts a worthwhile warranty on the motor, but not necessarily on the rest of the treadmill. A 12 year warranty on the motor is good, but 90 days for the rest isnt so good.

Epic treadmills arent known for long warranties.

But are epic treadmills the best value? There is no point in buying an epic treadmill merely for a great price if it isnt the best value.

And good value isnt just a case of a good price. Customer service and warranty come into it too. And on those the epic treadmills tend to fall down a little.

So if you are looking for an epic treadmill, or even an epic t 60, theres something to think about. Dont dismiss them out of hand, however, they are good treadmills for the price, just not as well supported as they could be. And if you can buy an extended warranty with the treadmill at a reasonable price then this would be worthwhile.

Where do you buy them? Well they are available at Costco, but the range is very limited. And at the time of writing the epic t60 treadmill is not listed for sale at Costco. Thats something else to think about. If you really want one then try and find out why they dont seem to offer them at the moment. This may of course change though.

Wanted: Treadmill for an Elephant

Maggie, the 22 year-old African elephant, has been a resident of the Alaska Zoo since 1983. The Zoo recently decided that Maggie needs nicer quarters, more attention, and a treadmill. She weighs 9,100 pounds and does not get enough exercise, especially during the long Alaskan winter months.

Alaska Zoo officials debated this past year about whether to keep Maggie. She has been the only elephant in the zoo since 1997 when her companion of 14 years, Annabelle, died. Some experts believe that in order to be healthy and happy a zoo elephant should be part of a small herd of 3 or more.

The Zoos elephant committee decided that the risks of moving Maggie out of state and of totally changing her life were too great. Besides, she seems happy here and she has a familiar herd in Alaska already. Numerous Zoo officials, animal handlers and exercisers, and familiar frequent visitors spend many hours a day with her.

In order to increase Maggies comfort and health, zoo officials decided to give Maggies living quarters softer flooring and better ventilation. Zoo staff will also increase the number of hours that they spend with Maggie from 8 hours daily to 12 to 16 hours daily.

Finally, the Zoo will help Maggie get more year-round exercise and lose weight. They will purchase an elephant-sized treadmill. However, nobody has ever designed or built an elephant treadmill. Designs are being developed now, but if you have any good ideas bring them forward.

Then stand in line behind me to watch Maggie work out on her new treadmill.

Can you imagine the elephant-sized headphones and iPod that shell need?

How Treadmills Compare To Other Types Of Home Fitness Equipment

J.GustafsonHow Treadmills Compare To Other Types Of Home Fitness Equipment

When it comes to exercise, people like to walk or run. These are natural activities for us. They can have practical applications, such as getting from one place to another. They require less gear than many other forms of exercise (although you can spend a bundle on shoes, clothes and other accessories if you really wanted). And walking or running are great forms of exercise. They burn calories, work many muscle groups and strengthen cardiovascular components in the body. Walking is one of the best or perhaps the only feasible form of exercise for people with diseases such as osteoporosis, hypertension and chronic back pain. Walking doesnt require a lot of technical know-how or instruction. We already know how to do it, and a few pointers about heart rate and breathing will at least get us on the road. In general, walking and running are easy and convenient ways to improve health and fitness and a home treadmill adds to this overall appeal.

According to the Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association, over 40 million consumers purchase treadmills each year and the number continues to grow. Treadmills account for over 1/3 of all home exercise equipment sales. So why do so many people choose treadmills and how do they compare to stair machines, stationary bikes and other home fitness equipment?

Ease and Convenience

The number one reason people use a treadmill is convenience. It allows you to exercise even when the weather is bad or the fitness center is closed. You can exercise in the early morning or after dinner or whenever the mood strikes you. You can even use your treadmill in the buff if you dont feel like washing your workout clothes.

You can read, watch TV, talk with friends, or listen to music or audiotapes while you exercise on a treadmill. You can keep an eye on your kids, wait for files to download, take care of dinner or the laundry and even meditate, think through problems or make grocery lists.

For those who need to stay in the office until five even when its not busy, or who prefer to exercise in the privacy of their own homes, a treadmill is ideal. Also, in some areas and neighborhoods, walking or running exposes one to traffic, muggers or vicious dogs. These hazards are avoided by using a treadmill.

Another reason people like treadmills is because you can just hop on and walk without a great deal of preparation and even if you dont work terribly hard at it, you still accomplish something. But todays treadmills make it easy to program in workout routines that simulate hills or vary speeds to enhance the effectiveness of your workout or challenge you to work harder and improve. The control panels are typically user friendly and many machines have built in heart rate monitors.

Clearly a treadmill provides several advantages over walking or running outside. And it is often easier and less expensive than other types of home exercise equipment, but how does it compare in terms of pure cardiovascular workout and calorie burning?

A Better Burn

According to a study done by the Medical College of Wisconsin and the VA Medical Center in Milwaukee, a person using a treadmill for 60 minutes burns an average of 865-705 calories. Check that against other common exercise equipment:

stair machine 746-637 calories burned

rowing machine 739-606 calories burned

stationary cycle 604-5956 calories burned

cross-country ski machine 678-595 calories burned

Treadmill vs Elliptical Machine

What about the new elliptical machines? An elliptical cross trainer with handles to work the upper body provides a workout that compares to that of a treadmill when it comes to muscles used and heart rate issues. The main difference between the two types of home exercise equipment is that and elliptical machine operates more smoothly and creates less of an impact on bones and joints. This might be good for those with recent injuries or chronic conditions, but it is the impact that helps maintain or improve bone density, which in turn strengthens bones and prevents the loss of calcium.

Most experts agree that a healthy person needs the bouncing and jarring associated with walking or running to keep bones, muscles and joints working properly. A treadmill is one of the few home fitness machines that provide this type of exercise. And most come with a cushioned platform to minimize impact or keep it at an acceptable level. As with any form of exercise, it is a good idea to check with your doctor first if you have health conditions that may make it difficult or unwise for you to participate in certain activities.

With a treadmill, the concept is basically simple. If you want to work harder, you increase the incline or the speed. Usually this is done with a push of the button. An elliptical machine can be adjusted to target certain muscle groups, but it requires some knowledge and usually must be done manually. And because elliptical machines are relatively new to the home fitness market, there are fewer models to choose from and they tend to cost a bit more than the average treadmill. Some people have commented that they feel the elliptical machines can be more difficult to use because the motions do not feel as natural as walking or running. It is a good idea to try out any piece of exercise equipment before buying to see how it feels and fits with your needs.

Many people who exercise do so because they know they should, not because they thoroughly enjoy it. Sure you feel good after you complete your workout, but sometimes getting motivated can be difficult. And if you are going to put in the time, you want to know that what youre doing is actually helping you burn calories and become more fit. Treadmills rank at the top of the list when it comes to home fitness equipment, providing one of the most effective workouts in proportion to the amount of time spent. So make your movements count. Try a treadmill.

From Price to Performance Top Treadmills Reviewed

J.GustafsonFrom Price to Performance Top Treadmills Reviewed

A treadmill can be an excellent exercise machine, providing a convenient and relatively inexpensive way to stay fit. But with over a dozen different manufacturers out there, each with a collection of different styles of equipment, it can be difficult to know which treadmill is best for you.

How much you can spend and what type of exercise you plan to do will help determine which price range and manufacturers are right for you. It is important to research the specific features you need based on whether you plan to walk, jog or do all out running training. But a good place to start is often to get an overview of the manufacturers out there and the cost of a treadmill. Below is an overview of ten of the most popular treadmill models and their general ratings in the industry.

A company called Icon Health and Fitness is perhaps the largest and most well known treadmill manufacturer in the world. They also make other types of exercise equipment. In the treadmill realm, they produce Reebok, NordicTrack, Weslo, Proform and Image brands. All five of these rank among the most popular and offer consumers a range or prices and options.

Weslo
Of all the Icon brands, Weslo treadmills are the least expensive, and in fact are typically the lowest priced of any treadmill regardless of manufacturer. They are entry-level machines intended for use by beginners and walkers that do not engage in a more demanding workout. They lack the power of more expensive brands and are built with smaller running areas. And warranties are typically no longer than 90 days.

In the Weslo line, the Weslo 400 CS treadmill sells for under $400. It is consistently picked as one of the top budget treadmill models.

For those interested in a bit more advanced treadmill, the Weslo EX18 sells for $500 but can be hard to find. It is worth the search though as it is perhaps the best Weslo model and will provide a good machine for the beginner or walker on a budget.

Image
Image is another brand of treadmill produced by Icon Fitness. This line is slightly more expensive than Weslo, but is still considered a budget machine, typically selling for under $1000. Many experts feel that Image treadmills offer the best value for the average person. The only drawback is the warranty, which is only 90 days on many Image models.

The Image 1200 treadmill has a 2.0 hp continuous duty motor that provides a maximum speed of 10 mph. The platform can adjust to inclines from 0-10%. It is a great choice for those runners on a bit of a budget and for those who want to spend $1000 or less. The Image 10.6QL was ranked among the top five treadmills by U.S. Consumer Reports. It has six programmable workouts and also allows you to determine your speed and incline based on a heart rate monitor. It is IFIT compatible, which means you can connect to the Internet to access online workouts. It costs around $1400 and is folding for convenient storage.

Proform
Proform treadmills by Icon provide shoppers with perhaps the most comprehensive options in exercise equipment. Budget models start at $400 and the overwhelming selection continues up the spectrum to several mid priced models that fall in the $1000 to $2000 range. The Proform 795SL treadmill sells for under $1000 and is often a top pick among consumers and fitness experts. The LX 660 sells for under $600 and has plenty of features for a budget treadmill. Like many of the budget treadmills, Proforms often have a less than stellar warranty, typically 90 days.

NordicTrack
There are literally dozens of different NordicTrack treadmill models produced by Icon. They range in price from around $800 for a NordicTrack C1800 to $2000 for a 7500R model. Many fitness experts feel that consumers spend a bit more for the name brand when they purchase a Nordictrack treadmill. The machines often look very nice but may not always offer the best buy as some people have experienced problems with reliability. All models typically come with a heart rate monitor, but some of the less expensive models offer a 1.5 hp motor and a smaller platform, often around 50.

On the plus side, NordicTrack treadmills often offer good cushioning for those who dont want to replicate the uneven, jolting conditions of a true road workout. Their 3-2-1 warranty covers the motor for three years, the frame and other parts for two years and all labor charges for one year.

The NordicTrack Teton, which sells for just under $1500 and is a great choice for incline training and hiking. The Apex 5100i, which sells for around $1700 is also a popular choice.

Reebok
Reebok treadmills also depend on name recognition to help attract buyers. Models often look nice and have plenty of features but have been known to be less durable than other brands. It is important to note that Reebok home treadmills are not made by the same company as the commercial models found in fitness clubs.

A plus side of the Reebok treadmills is the warranty. On most models the frame is covered for a lifetime, the belt and deck and all electrical and mechanical components for 2 years, and labor for 12 months. The motor typically has a 2-3 year guarantee. One of the most popular Reebok models is the ACD4, which sells for around $1700.

Smooth
Another treadmill manufacturer that is making a name for itself recently is Smooth. This companys biggest marketing appeal is that they sell their treadmills direct to the consumer over the Internet on their company website. They claim this allows them to reduce prices, and in fact, many models run less than comparative treadmills offered by other manufacturers.

All Smooth treadmills have a 10-year warranty on the motor and 12-month labor warranty. Other parts such as the belt, deck and electronic components it typically covered from 2 to 5 years. This protection makes Smooth treadmills an appealing buy to those who have had problems with previous equipment or simply dont like to be stuck fixing things.

Smooth treadmills often rank at the top of their respective price band listings. Many experts choose them for their excellent features and reasonable price. The Smooth 5.0P has a 2.5 hp motor and 9 preset programs. It has been called the best treadmill on the market for overall value. At just under $2000, the Smooth 7.1HR is a popular model for those who require a bit more advanced model. Both units fold for storage.

Trimline
Trimline is another popular brand of home treadmills. They are often compared to Smooth equipment and have a longer warranty but a higher price tag. In some instances, experts feel the expense is justified, while in other models it is not. Trimline offers six folding models and three non-folding. The Trimline 1610, which sells for around $1000 has been recommended as a good starter machine. And the Trimline 7200 remains a top seller despite the price increase that puts it over $2000.

Keys
Keys Fitness is a relative newcomer to the treadmill industry, getting its start in 1997. They have shown improvements in quality and features each year and are known to offer a competitive product in the low to mid priced treadmills. They offer a 10-year warranty on their motors, 2 years parts and electronics, and 1 year on service. They are often said to be comparable to Smooth in price and features. The Keys 1200 is a nice standard treadmill that sells for just over $1000. The 8800 HR model is more heavy duty with a bigger motor and platform and a higher price of over $2000.

Spirit
Spirit is a treadmill company that has been around for over 20 years. They are usually known for leading the industry in new features. If something different or innovative comes out, chances are Spirit was the one to introduce it. Although their SL 188 is priced below $1000, and is a good buy at that price, the majority of their models are in the mid price range of $1500 up to $3000 plus. Spirit treadmills often have good warranties and solid quality.

Landice
Landice is often considered the top of the line in treadmills. The usually cost over $3000 and at this price, you get some great features, heavy duty motors, and a lifetime warranty on parts. If you have the money and are serious about your training, any of the Landice models, either in the L7 or L8 series, provide quality options.

Cybex
Cybex is another manufacturer that produces high end treadmills. Formerly known as Trotter, the treadmills produced by this company have high quality and prices to match. Again, it is more a matter of which one fits your needs because at this price you'd better be getting a good machine. The Cybex 300T, which sells for $3000 and the Trotter Elite, which costs nearly $4500 are two options.

As these comparisons show, budget will be a starting point in selecting a home treadmill, as will the way in which you plan to use the machine. While for the most part you get what you pay for, fitness experts caution that name brand treadmills arent necessarily better than less well-known equipment. Check the warranty, check the features, and most importantly, check with people who have owned the treadmills or do repairs on fitness equipment. With so much information available, making an informed decision is easy. Its actually sticking to your exercise routine that will be the tough part.

Treadmill Workout Ideas That Make Fitness Fun

J.GustafsonTreadmill Workout Ideas That Make Fitness Fun

Research shows that in order to lose weight safely and keep it off, you need to exercise. And even those who are not overweight benefit from an exercise or workout routine. But many people dont exercise regularly, which puts them at risk for heart disease, accidents or injuries, and other health concerns. There are many reasons people give why they dont exercise more. Its boring, its too difficult, they dont have enough time or theyd rather be doing other things. Some people arent sure how to exercise and they are uncomfortable going to a fitness center to work with a trainer. But with a good treadmill and a workout routine that fits your needs, exercise can be enjoyable, convenient and beneficial.

A treadmill is a perfect choice in exercise equipment for many people. It allows you to walk or run in the security and privacy of your own home. Unlike weightlifting or aerobics, you dont have to use your hands or move your body across the room. Typically, it requires less concentration than other types of workouts, especially if you have a treadmill that allows you to program in a variety of workout components, such as hills, speed changes, and adjustments to maintain a target heart rate.

The Basics

The type of treadmill workout that is best for you depends on your overall fitness level, what you are trying to accomplish through your exercise routine, and what you enjoy doing. Continuous training is perhaps the most common type of treadmill routine. Essentially, it involves running at a set pace, usually for 20 to 45 minutes. This type of exercise workout is ideal for incorporating some fun activities into your treadmill workout. The majority of our suggestions below are aimed at those who are basically turning on the machine and walking or running until their time is up.

Those who prefer a more demanding workout or who are in training for marathons or other stamina events go with interval training. It consists of shorter bouts of activity performed in quick succession and at a higher intensity. Because this requires more effort and concentration, it may be difficult to let your mind wander or to focus on other activities. How much you have to concentrate depends on the individual but there are still some fun activities listed below that can be added to any treadmill workout.

One of the most important aspects of any exercise routine geared toward improving cardio strength is to be sure you are exercising in such a way that you achieve and maintain your target heart rate. Maximum heart rate is calculated by subtracting your age in years from 220. Most people agree that a good target heart rate zone is 60 to 80 percent of your maximum heart rate. Because this factor is so critical to healthy, productive exercise, many treadmills come with a heart rate monitor built in, often in the handrails that you hold onto when using the machine. But you can also purchase an inexpensive heart rate monitor from most large department stores, health stores or at hundreds of locations online.

How you choose to achieve your target heart rate, be it walking, jogging, continuous or interval training is up to you. But we have some suggestions to help you make exercise more fun and increase your chances of sticking with it and exercising regularly.

Tune It Up

Perhaps the most popular way to entertain yourself while using your treadmill is to listen to music. It can help you focus and give you something else to think about while enduring even the most strenuous parts of a workout. It is a good way to check out new music and expand your horizons. Or put in your favorite motivational music the songs that really get you moving and shaking and your 45-minute routine will whiz by. There are some treadmill music CDs that have been compiled specifically for those who need a little motivation in their treadmill exercise routine. Use headphones to avoid disturbing family members if necessary.

Learn While You Burn

Maybe you prefer to lose yourself in a good story. Some people are able to read a print book or magazine while they exercise on their treadmills. Several companies sell book holders that attach to the treadmill and work well as long as you are not bouncing around so much that it is difficult to read the print. Many people listen to books or storytelling on tape or CDs. This is especially productive for those who dont have time to sit down with a good book or who fall asleep when trying to read in bed.

Mary Gossen had a book she truly wanted to read, but the only time she could find in her busy schedule was in the evening before bed. This didnt work well for her because she would doze off after just one or two pages. There is something about reading before bed that puts me right out, she shared. But I got the book on tape and listened to it while I walked on the treadmill and I was able to finish it in under a week. In fact, I found myself walking longer than my normal amount of time because I didnt want to turn off the tape. Now I listen to books on tape all the time while I exercise.

An alternative is listening to language tapes. This works especially well if you have a vacation planned. You can build your language skills and get in shape for that bikini, and the excitement of the pending trip helps motivate you to get on the treadmill. Place a fan nearby or get one that attaches to your machine and you can even imagine you are already there, enjoying the tropical breezes.

Not able to get away for a vacation? Pick a destination youd like to visit and then calculate how many miles you walk or jog each workout and plot them on a map. Watch the travel channels on TV or rent a video guide to the area to help provide incentive and distraction.

Guilt Free TV

Many people watch television while on the treadmill because they say it makes them feel less guilty about watching. A good movie can help you forget you are exercising, and you are probably not going to fill up with popcorn and treats if you watch while youre on the treadmill. You will probably have to break it up into several segments, but the anticipation to see the end of the movie makes you that much more eager to exercise. Also, by agreeing to exercise everyday when your favorite sitcom reruns, soap or reality TV show is on helps you stick to a regular workout schedule.

Sarah Marcus got hooked on a soap opera while she was home on maternity leave. When she returned to work, she began taping the soap and then watching it while she exercised each evening. I got to see my soap and my husband got to spend some time with the baby while I exercised. Plus it helped me to lose my pregnancy weight faster.

These are just some ideas to get you started and help make your treadmill workout more enjoyable and hence something you will look forward to and stick with. Maybe you get a headset and talk with a friend on the phone while you workout. Or better yet, set up dual treadmills side by side and make a date out of it. The possibilities are many and whatever keeps you exercising on a regular basis is a good thing. Half the fun can be experimenting to see what works best for you.

5 Questions You Should Ask Before Purchasing a Treadmill

With the advancement in the treadmill industry, quality machines could now cost you up to $5,000. So purchasing the wrong equipment could prove costly. And with the huge variety of treadmills in the market today, finding one that suits you best has become even more confusing.

This is the reason why I created these guide questions. It aims to educate people on how to purchase the best treadmill for their needs and avoid some costly mistakes.

So before you start shopping for your new treadmill, answer first the following guide questions below. They will guide you into making the right purchase.

1) Who would use the treadmill?

The treadmill you would be buying would depend on how much you weigh, how tall you are, and how many people would use it.

Most treadmills have a maximum user weight limit, so be sure that your treadmill will be able to support your body weight. For tall people, I suggest you choose machines with lengthy decks, since your strides will be longer than normal.

If the whole family would be using it, it would be better to buy higher quality treadmills (those above $2,000) to make sure that it can handle the workouts of everyone in the family.

2) How often would the treadmill be used?

The quality (and price) of the machine you will be buying would also depend on the number of times the treadmill will be used in a week and for how long. As a guide, a person who weighs less than 200 lbs. and plans to run on it for 30 minutes a day, 7 times a week should get a treadmill in the $1,500 - $2,000 range.

3) Where will the treadmill be used?

The size and weight of the treadmill you will buy is another factor to be considered. If you have limited space at home, then buying a huge treadmill would not be a smart move. Also, an extremely heavy treadmill is recommended to be only on the ground floor of an old house.

For those with limited spaces at home, you might want to choose a treadmill with foldable feature. This allows you to fold the treadmill after use to save space.

4) What features do you need?

You need to determine the features that would be useful to you and be sure that the treadmill you will buy has those features. If you want to workout in your target heart rate then make sure that the machine you will be buying has a heart rate monitor.

5) How much can you afford?

Finally, know how much you can really spend for a treadmill then, considering numbers 1-4, choose the treadmill in that price range that suits you best. If you cant find your perfect treadmill in that price range, then you might have to look for one with a higher price tag.

Well, there you have it. Hopefully these treadmill buying guide questions was able to enlighten you on the kind of treadmill that you really need.

Buying A Treadmill - 3 Essential Tips

If you're buying a treadmill, chances are you've done lots of research already. You probably know exactly what makes up a high quality treadmill and have an idea of which features you want in your unit.

But even with this knowledge many people still fall prey to slick treadmill deals that end up costing them in the long run.

In order to keep that from happening to you, here are 3 essential buying tips to make sure you choose the very best treadmill for you.

1) Not All Treadmill Brands Are Created Equal

I recently had a gentleman e-mail me asking for advice on which treadmill he should buy. He had narrowed it down to 3 choices:

Choice 1: Brand A: 2.5 HP motor $999

Choice 2: Brand A: 1.75 HP motor $899

Choice 3: Brand B: 2.0 HP motor $1099

He asked me which treadmill I would buy. He was clearly leaning towards Choice 1.

This was the natural choice for most people and it makes sense: get the most for the least. Or get the most motor power for the least amount of money.

However, my answer surprised him. I told him if it were my choice, I would go with Choice 3: Brand B for $1099. Here's why:

Although the motor power is lower than Choice 1 and the price is higher, Brand B makes an overall better treadmill. Why?

Brand B has a reputation for making high quality treadmills and backing them up with extensive warranties, including 10 years on the motor. It can afford to give such lengthy warranties because it knows that it makes a quality product that probably WON'T break down - even in 10 years.

Brand A on the other hand offers a 90-day motor warranty. What does that tell you about the quality of parts?

Although motor power is a good feature to consider when buying a treadmill - you have to be careful. Look at it in the context of the whole treadmill - including the brand.

Not all treadmill brands are created equal. Some treadmill brands use extremely high quality materials. Others well, don't.

Make sure to look beyond just the bare numbers when choosing a treadmill. Look at the whole picture to find the best treadmill for you.

2) Don't Always Believe What The Salesperson Tells You

Get it in writing. This isn't to put down any salesperson - but they are human. They do make mistakes, and sometimes this can end up costing you.

I had another lady e-mail me asking for advice on choosing a treadmill. She'd narrowed it down to several and was leaning towards one in particular (let's call it Treadmill X).

She had been told by a salesperson in the store that this Treadmill X (for $899) came with a lifetime warranty on the motor.

This lady was smart. She was looking at the whole treadmill picture. The price was excellent. The motor power was average (1.75 HP). And who can pass up a lifetime motor warranty?

But wait a minute.

I was fairly familiar with this treadmill brand and knew something was off.

This particular treadmill brand never gives lifetime motor warranties - ever. Not even on their commercial treadmills. So why would they offer a lifetime motor warranty on one of their economy treadmills?

I voiced my concerns to her and wasn't surprised to hear back a couple of days later that the salesperson had actually been mistaken about the lifetime warranty.

If she had bought this treadmill simply based on what the salesperson said, she might have gotten a nasty surprise - especially since this particular treadmill brand is known for being extremely costly to repair.

Don't always trust what the salesperson says. Make sure to get it in writing before you buy!

3 Forget the Price Tag - Look at the REAL Price Of The Treadmill

Price is probably one of the most important factors when buying a treadmill. But sometimes the price of the treadmill can be misleading.

For example, let's say you're looking at Brand A in a store with a price of $799. Pretty good price right?

A much better deal than Brand B - sold online - at $999.

But look closer at Brand A. Brand A only comes with a 90 day parts and labor warranty so you need to buy added coverage. You pay $50 for a 2 year extended motor warranty.

So Brand A's total cost is now $849 (with a 2 year motor warranty)

Brand B is still $999 (with a 10 year motor warranty already included)

Overall, you figure that Brand A is still the better deal since it's cheaper.

But look closer. You need to pay shipping costs for Brand A. Shipping costs from most stores usually run you about $150.

Brand B, since it is sold online offers free shipping (most online treadmill sellers do).

So Brand A's total cost is now $998 (with a 2 year motor warranty)

Brand B is still $999 (with a 10 year motor warranty)

With Brand A, $799 has gone to buy the treadmill, $50 has gone to buy the warranty and $150 has gone into shipping.

With Brand B, $999 has gone to buy the treadmill (warranty included).

So which treadmill do you think actually gives you the most value for your money?

And don't forget that many online treadmill stores don't charge sales tax. The store that sells Brand A does. That technically makes Brand A MORE expensive than Brand B.

So when comparing treadmills, make sure to consider the TOTAL COST of each treadmill before you buy.

By keeping these 3 tips in mind when purchasing a treadmill:

- Not all treadmill brands are created equal

- Don't believe what the salesperson tells you - get it in writing

and

- Look at the REAL price of the treadmill

you'll be well on your way to choosing the best treadmill investment for you. Good luck and have fun!

GETTING SOFT IN BED? ...KNOW THE FACTS ON IMPOTENCYJinky C. MesiasImpotency is becoming a common problem nowadays; its probably because of todays stressful way of life. People always seemed in a hurry that later in the evening it poses a problem especially when it comes to performing in bed since sex requires concentration as well as relaxation. And aside from that sex could not be performed in haste and in tension. In order to get the optimal effect of sex both partners has to be relaxed. Impotency or erectile dysfunction is most common among men. This erectile dysfunction is a condition in which the male organ does not have the proper erection needed for a pleasurable and satisfying sexual intercourse. Aside from that, men experiencing erectile dysfunction also tend to lose not only the power to erect but even the ability to lubricate thus making the sexual act a not so pleasurable experience. Impotency comes in three forms. The first form of impotency is called the primary impotency wherein the problem of erectile dysfunction is present from the very start of the sexual activity. The second form is called the secondary impotency which is the most common and not so alarming since this form only implies that failure of erection is due to factors such as stress and will not result to a permanent erectile dysfunction. The third form is impotency due to advancement in age since older men just simply doesnt have the usual strength that younger men have to hold or keep their erection.Aside from that there are factors that contribute or cause impotency. One factor that causes impotency is excessive masturbation and even an excessive intercourse may also result to impotency. Moreover, impotency may also be the cause of depression, stress, fatigue, alcoholism, smoking, drug abuse, side effects of medication, childhood abuse as well as too much sexual indulgence. And also, there are certain diseases that also cause impotency and these are as follows: diabetes, blockage in the arteries, neurological disorders, and disease in the erectile tissue of the penis, pelvic surgery or trauma, disease of the kidney and the liver, hormonal abnormalities, and peyronic disease. In addition, men with impotency problems have genital organs that can be considered as paralyzed since their penis can not have an erection and therefore can not engaged in a sexual act. However, there are some cases wherein a impotent man can have an erection but the problem with it is that he discharges before intercourse and if that happens the penis returns to its soft state. The problem of impotency does not only revolve around the erection of the penis but somehow poses a much greater and deeper problem such the feeling of being useless as well as the deterioration of self-esteem. In fact there are cases wherein men with impotency problems commit suicide since they can no longer bear the humiliation of not having an erection.

Motorized or Manual Treadmills - Which One Is Best For You?

When people buy a treadmill, one of the basic questions to ask is Do I want a motorized treadmill or a manual treadmill?

Whats the difference between the two?

The Basic Difference:

With a manual (or non-motorized) treadmill, you push the belt with your feet. The action of your feet against the treadmill moves the belt.

With a motorized treadmill you keep pace as the treadmill motor moves the belt for you at a pace you set electronically.

Advantages & Disadvantages:

Manual treadmills:

Tend to be cheaper (since youre not paying for the motor) and can range from $200 to $600.

They also tend to be smaller, take up less space and are easier to move (since they arent as heavy as a motorized treadmill).

Some people have theorized that manual treadmills burn more calories than motorized treadmill since you supply the power to move the belt.

This is unfortunately NOT TRUE.

Because you supply the power, unless you are in top athletic shape, you will tend to move slower and get tired more easily. This results in LESS calories burned on a manual treadmill.

Plus, the action of getting the belt to move initially and keep it moving can cause a strain on your joints.

Its also difficult to run on a manual treadmill so if you want to start a jogging program or train as a runner, a manual treadmill would not meet your needs.

Motorized treadmills:

Tend to be more expensive and can range from $800 up to $8000. However, they tend to last longer and are built to take more of a beating.

Also, because the belt moves for you at varying speeds, this motivates you to keep up and actually results in more calories burned (vs. a manual treadmill).

You can easily adjust the speed and incline on most motorized treadmills, usually while still on the machine. This makes it much more convenient and saves the strain on your joints.

A final advantage to the motorized treadmills is that they tend to have more options and features (iFit compatibility, numerous built-in workout programs, scrolling information consoles). This makes your workout more interesting and possibly even enjoyable as you can watch your progress.

This means that you will probably USE the treadmill more often which again results in more calories burned and a better body achieved.

The Final Conclusion:

Unless youre in extremely good physical shape, a manual treadmill is not recommended. Choose a motorized treadmill for maximum calorie burning and exercise convenience.

The biggest motivation to choose a manual treadmill is the low cost. However, you can find a quality motorized treadmill for a relatively low cost if you know where to look.

Regardless of what you choose remember to have fun and commit yourself to a better, healthier you!

But even with this knowledge many people still fall prey to slick treadmill deals that end up costing them in the long run.

In order to keep that from happening to you, here are 3 treadmill buying tips that most buyers don't know. These will help you choose the best treadmill for you.
